The following is a report on the investigation of the utility of the cadmium electrode, as an instrument to test the condition of any cell, and to find whether it has positive element weakness or negative element weakness.
On a good cell which is fully charged and charging, we get a reading of +2.5 on the positive and - .3 on the negative, whilst when a good cell is discharged down to 1.8 volts and discharging, we get a reading of + 2.05 on the positive and + .25 on the negative. Any reading which comes below the positive readings and above the negative readings given above shows to the extent by which the elements are positively weak or negatively weak respectively.
Attached is a chart of these readings in which no reading on a good cell should come inside the shaded portion.
