TO HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} ORIGINAL R1/M22.7.27. C. to BJ. WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} 20HP. FOR NEXT 10,000 MILES: X5770 / X5840C ( TO BE CALLED INDIA.3.) (A) ENGINE. Turbulent head, improved exhaust pipe, larger carburetter for increased performance, larger crankshaft, G.1. type crankshaft damper, spring guide oil relief valve, improved type valve springs, valve tappets without rollers, improved type limited friction multi-plate starter pinion. (B) FRAME. Lower by .750", plus 1.250" by wheels, or 2" nearer ground. 3" longer, and torsionally stiffened by 'X' cross member. Height above ground will be - front 19.50", rear 19.250" under load. Wheelbase increased by 3" to 11 ft. (C) RADIATOR & BONNET. Radiator with vertical integral shutters, bonnet with improved catch and lock. (D) STEERING & DASH. Always 'D' (never 'B') steering, always longer scuttle, because better appearance and better front seats. Cast dash or similar dash in sheet metal. (E) FRONT AXLE. Parallel control by shock damper. (F) REAR AXLE. .750" or 1" hypoid to enable floor to be lower. We are not ready for this but are testing same on EAC. Phantom. Rear springs .5" negative camber: Mechanic's type universal joints. (G) PETROL TANK. Pushed up between frame to increase road clearance on rear bump. (H) WHEELS. 6" low pressure on 19" rims for England. (Present 21" rims are too large for 6" tyres.) Dunlop medium pressure on 21" rims for Colonies, when greater road clearance is desired. (I) SHOCK DAMPERS. Shock dampers increased in poundage. (J) INSTRUMENT BOARD. Grouped instruments. (K) WHEEL & LUGGAGE CARRIER AT REAR. EAC. 7. type. (L) CENTRAL LUBRICATION. To be fitted throughout. (M) DIPPING HEADLAMPS. Of present design slightly modified. Better appearance and riding. Better performance - i.e. carry heavier body: less engine detonations. Better road clearance. Better floor clearance. The cost, and ease of construction, has now increased in importance in our studies. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
