Regarding the case hardening of the annulus, should this be thought to be treacherous, we could test making some in nickel chrome, or similar steel, which would wear well, heat treated to a high Brinnel before finishing.

I think it would be quite good, if reasonably convenient, to make a few and test them, say three, and also test the large planet gear in the same material, if it is thought that the teeth of this is the cause of the breakage.
