Test 3.

We then removed the (inertia ring scheme Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}579) and built the slipper wheel up to the same poundage, as when received from the Test Dept., i.e. 13 lbs with 4 springs left out, the engine front was then boxed up.

We then fitted back the grummetts to the valve guides but to do this we got some Production valve spring washer wedges E.50147 and had them reduced on the outer diameter by .015" before being sawn through, this lifts the top spring washer .090" and allows us ample clearance, with the valve springs Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}477 fitted.

The gear rattle when run as above was very good, just audible about 300 R.P.M., which we consider passable, this is at a higher speed than usual and just out of the usual slow running position.

Results proved that the inertia ring made the gear rattle worse.

The lighter load on the camshaft was a decided improvement, but unfortunately we have no value for the engine gear rattle on this chassis before we started.

The engine gears themselves were a very good set with very close clearances.

We sent the chassis back to the Test Dept noon 20.4.32., fixed up as above, as per Test 3 above.

Alteration to standard (2 items).

(1) H.S. 477 Valve springs.

(2) Valve wedges E.50147 reduced .015" dia.
