SEQUENCE STARTER NO.1 SCHEME.

We are uncertain as to whether you favour any further work being done on the No.1 scheme sequence starter. A crankcase rig had been prepared and a number of parts were in readiness (though not completely) and the following combinations had been proposed for test on this rig, but owing to the arrival of your No.2. sequence starter scheme, this work was put in abeyance pending the first trials of that No.2. scheme. It would now be possible, without a great deal further work, to make tests on this rig of one or two of the possible combinations. The following combinations had been variously proposed for trial :-

(1) 34° 52' spiral with pinion operated switch. (The first arrangement tried was the 34° 52' spiral with the actuator box operated switch and it will be remembered that contact was made too early).

(2) 34° 52' spiral with pinion operated switch and rubber buffer scheme.

(3) 20° spiral with modified pinion operated switch (in place of actuator box operated switch) This was the arrangement tried on the car (14-EX) and reported upon in our EFC7/T6.12.26.

(4) 20° spiral with modified pinion operated switch (in place of actuator box operated switch) with rubber buffer scheme.

(5) 5° spiral with actuator box operated switch without rubber buffer scheme.

(6) 5° spiral with actuator box operated switch with rubber buffer scheme.

The 5° spiral has not yet been tried at all.

It would appear to us on the whole that the most promising scheme might be No.6 above, and if it is
