Y4693 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Lid.{A. J. Lidsey}2/KT. February 21st 1933. Mr. G.M. Maclure, Fillongley Grange, Fillongley, Nr. Coventry. Dear Mr. Maclure, In connection with work we are engaged upon at the moment, we wondered if you would be good enough to let us know, if it is not giving away official secrets, what the maximum engine oil temperatures are on Riley cars. We should imagine that on the six cylinder models the oil reaches a higher temperature (due to the large diameter centre bearing) than on the 9 HP. car. On the engine we are interested in, the oil temperature rises to what appears to be excessive heights, yet at the same time we have very little evidence to show that the high temperature has any deleterious effects. Information we have gained from several outside sources as to the most beneficial oil temperature varies greatly, and we wondered whether, in view of your wide experience on racing cars and others, you would be kind enough to give us your views on this point. I am sorry to say that I crashed my 9 HP. car badly this week-end, and expect that it will be back at your works shortly for repairs. I am, of course, anxious that the job shall be well and truly repaired, by which I mean that I should not like the Insurance people to persuade the repairers that badly bent parts can be straightened out again, and be as good as new parts. I do not know whether you personally have any connection with the department that deals with work of this nature, but I should be extremely grateful to you for anything you can do to see that the job gets put through satisfactorily. I hope you and yours are well, Yours very sincerely, | ||
