Dear Mr. Combes,

No doubt you will remember me in the old days when I used to call and see Mr. Taylor about his Bentley.

Almost immediately after the war started I was called back to our Works here, and here I have been ever since.

Naturally we are all out on production, but we have a very small department engaged on investigation and development work in connection with chassis.

One of the jobs under survey at the moment is Rear Axles on 3½-Litre Cars. We are producing a certain amount of data referring to axles suitable for this sort of chassis, and have already collected a considerable amount of information. However, we still want some more with reference to S.S. 3½-Litre Cars, and as you are Agents, I wondered if you could possibly drop me a line giving me information on the following points:-

1. Have you had any failures of differential pinions in the Spicer axle now fitted on the 3½-Litre?

2. If you have had failures do you attribute this to lack of attention, such as the changing of oil at suitable periods, or fatigue of the metal?

3. If you have had a failure, have you got the gear that failed, and if so could you let us have it to have a look at?

P.T.O.
