PHANTOM II SYNCHRO-MESH GEARBOX.

As requested in Dal/M26.10.31. we have carried out a test on the 25 HP. synchromesh gearbox using a heavier driven clutch member. We fitted a driven member of 3.5 times the normal inertia, this being approximately equivalent to the Phantom disc and Hardy joint. The synchro-mesh cones were entirely capable of dealing with this increased inertia. Very quick changes could be made from 2nd. to 3rd., 3rd. to top, and top to 3rd. at high road speeds; the speeds of the shafts being perfectly synchronised before the dogs engaged. In fact the gear lever could not be moved quickly enough to make a noise. Either third or top could be engaged from a fast tick over without noise.

We think therefore that we need have no fear of the P.II cones being inadequate.
