Referring to the question of fitting Phantom 3 engines with Stromberg downdraught carburetters, we have arranged an induction pipe scheme which will take either the double carburetter or two single ones. This will enable us to prove one system against the other and utilize the development work already carried out on the large bore 20/25. We are thereby not committed to one scheme only and this is important because in the double carburetter as manufactured there is a throttle bias due to the throttle spindle being at right angles to the induction pipe. Such a bias usually has a serious effect on distribution and consumption. It is supposed to be corrected on the normal double downdraught type by an eccentric air inlet but in the type we should have to use the air inlet is an elbow. This elbow may or may not have a similar effect but we are expecting to obtain some further information from the Stromberg Co. on this point. In the meantime we have arranged the position so that we shall be able to try both schemes on the same pipes as above. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} | ||
