(2) continued:-

arrangement when used with a S.M. 2nd speed clutch on the layshaft are:-

(a) a reverse gear can be used of the type which we prefer without limiting the size of the 2nd speed S.M. clutch which can be made as large as the 3rd motion shaft will permit.

(b) The reverse shaft is considerably shortened.

(3) A simple actuating lever is used to transfer the motion from the main sliders to a lower slider which has spherically mounted bearings. This actuating lever gives the necessary reversal of motion so that no change is made to the gear lever positions for the various gears and can also give an increase of leverage of actuation if this is desired.

A fork on the lower slider actuates the 2nd speed S.M. gear.

The patent should be taken out in the names of S.H. Grylls and W.G. Hardy.
