It will also be understood that at low speeds where the volt-amphere characteristic has not yet grown large enough to intersect the battery characteristic in its lower portion, the statement does not apply, but that an increase of amperes in this condition is accompanied by a fall of voltage, because the intersecting point, e.g. Diagram 2 U./lies on the top portion of the generator characteristic, and as a result increase of battery E.M.F. and/or internal resistance brings about a fall of charging current, just as in an ordinary shunt wound charging generator, which indeed the controlled machine virtually is when working in the condition stated.
