SPRING-GAITERS AND LUBRICATION.

Referring to your Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gy1/LG28.5.29 we are somewhat concerned at your suggestion that with the "O" series the spring-gaiter nipples need not be fitted. We agree that probably there are less complaints with squeaking in the case of the 20 h.p. chassis than with the "Phantom", but the fact remains that the trouble does arise with the 20 h.p. and that with both models we undoubtedly do succeed in improving the condition at least temporarily by lifting the weight off the springs, and filling with lubricating oil. Also these fittings are important for replenishing oil without having to go to the length of removing the spring-gaiters.

We do not think that the provision of grease packed into the gaiters will help matters at all, because as you are aware the difficulty is to get the lubricant to find its way to the actual points of squeaking contact which the grease is certainly not likely to do. We appreciate that there appears to be some difficulty in providing an Enots fitting to the rear of the front springs of the "Twenty", but we would urge that a way may be found to overcome this difficulty rather than to avoid fitting the part altogether. Why not provide a small spring-controlled ball fitting so that oil could be forced in by means of a syringe ? I find that in our Garage at Barlow Mews such a method would be in considerable favour and would take up less room than the Enots fitting.
