re. FOUR WHEEL BRAKES. x9940 x5940
40/50 AND GOSHAWK.

We are in some doubt as to how the conversion of cars delivered after the 1st. Nov. to the four wheel brake model will affect the coachwork.

As far as we can see we shall have to supply new sloping heelboards and floorboards to the front seats.

If these cars are fitted with concave valances as the 40/50 would be, it would be necessary to create a box over the front radius rod and end.

We therefore have 2 suggestions for the 40/50:-

(1) That Derby should issue you a fresh coachwork print of the 40/50 shewing the necessary clearance for the radius rod and end, and that all cars should be provided with this clearance.

(2) That all cars have the Goshawk box type of valance. This would entail a door to give access to the foot brake hand adjustment which would be in existence between the time of delivery and the conversion to four wheel brakes.

We do not know whether it is intended by Derby to recommend the standardisation of autovac feed for this chassis; if so, doors would not be required for the air tap and petrol tap.

In the case of the Goshawk since we have box type valances there will be no difficulty. The Goshawk four wheel brake conversion will have side lever mechanism, and we shall as soon as possible know the clearance necessary for these side levers and we therefore propose that chassis prints should be made shewing the clearance required for these levers, so that although the cars may be delivered with central change, we may convert to side levers without fouling the body.

These matters are very urgent and we should be very glad if you could kindly give us your views on the subject.
