We find that we cannot form the bearing surface for the 3rd. speed wheel solid with the shaft without making some modifications, as there is not clearance for grinding the splines on the forward end of the 3rd. motion shaft. We show the necessary clearance provided on N Sch.4232 herewith and also a centre bearing of the same size as on the layshaft which suits this scheme better by giving greater shoulder area on both sides of the bearing. There is nothing special about the main part of the bearing, but the washer which retains the rollers is special in that the corner radius is reduced. We suggest that we make this washer ourselves in order to be free from the objections which are attached to obtaining special parts from the bearing manufacturers. HDY.{William Hardy} Encl.
