22nd. April 1938.

New Hudson Ltd.,
Icknield Street,
BIRMINGHAM, 18.

For the attention of Mr.Fraser.

Ref. AF/AL.

Dear Sirs,

We are returning to you separately an expander unit for your examination. There are two faults in it -

(1) Pressure on the plungers does not push the expander cone to the extreme "brakes off" position.

(2) The travel of the cone is considerably less than 0.750".

The reason for complaint (1) is that the position of the slot edge "A" in the enclosed drawing is incorrect: it ought to be nearer the L.H. end of the plunger. We suggest widening the slot to 0.281" as the position of this edge is not critical. One plunger is worse than the other.

Complaint (2) is partly due to this fault, partly due to inaccuracy of the positioning of the edge "B" of the slot to the hole in the aluminium casing carrying the pin. A limit on the dimensions of 0.496 and .219" on your drawing is clearly necessary; will you please say how accurate you can maintain these dimensions.

In reply to your letter of 20th. April, as regards the standardisation of the brakes on the rear of Bentley, the Directors appear to have agreed to this and the order is likely to be placed in a months time. The matter is entirely in the Directors' hands and Mr.Robotham is anxious to standardise these brakes. The writer is not so keen on this combination.
