PHANTOM - HAND CONTROL FOR DAMPERS. We send herewith N.sch.3640. which shews our design for the hand operated valve for varying the damping. The spring given provides 5 lbs. per sq.in. maximum increase in pressure. If this is thought to be insufficient a stronger spring can easily be used. The valve spring and plunger are contained in a removable body to facilitate assembling and machining the casing. The plunger end comes flush with the guide at maximum load, and the guide then stops further movement of the lever. There will be leakage between the valve body and the casing, but we do not think this will be of any importance. We have deleted the external pipe and have placed the wire for retaining the adjustment washer on the plug instead of in the casing for easier machining. The filler has been altered to raise the oil level to the maximum practical height. The drawing we send shews the governor unit fitted to the Phantom, but we have done nothing, as far as we are aware, to prevent the unit being fitted to all of the cars. We are however investigating this more fully, and will send layoutd for other cars. We shall send a scheme for the control rods for Phantom which will go to the instrument board unless we are instructed by R.{Sir Henry Royce} to place the damper control on the steering column.
