the end room was insufficient to admit of the modification de-
manded by me and we have sent to Mr.Spinney a drawing of the hub
considerably differently arranged so as to permit of ample latitude
in the wear and length of the hub.

We had no idea of altering the hub until Mr.Bailey drew the
one of smaller diameter and length, we therefore concluded that the
Dunlop Co. would make our requirements one of their standards.
This is good and, acting upon this, we have still further reduced
the diameter but not the length, which is needed both for the front
hub and the stability of the wheel.

You will notice that several improvements have been intro-
duced that will make the matter considerably better and the work
done by Mr.Bailey on the rear hub leaves the matter in a very
much better state than it has been up to the present. I trust
therefore that the Works and the Dunlop people will push forward
3 to 6 sets of wheels to meet these requirements with the utmost
possible speed and as a decently large order depends upon it, it
will be certainly worth their while to make a special effort.

This particular trouble will not arise when fitting Rudge-
Whitworth wheels, which we shall, no doubt, be required to do
frequently.

In helping the Dunlop people with their design it must be
distinctly placed before them that we are not taking any responsi-
bility from their shoulders either in the matter of the efficiency
of material or the design of parts- we ask them to supply and they
must take the full responsibility, as it is the case with the
