SOLEX CARBURETTER TESTS ON PHANTOM.

We have carried out some tests with a twin choke Solex carburetter fitted to a standard Phantom both on the test bed and on the road.

The carb. used was an ordinary production model very similar to that used on the Hispano but the chokes, diffusers etc. were proportioned to suit our engine, also an induction system was designed by the Solex Co. to be used in conjunction with their carburetter.

The carb. is of the simple static type employing diffuser type jets similar to those we use in our aero carburetters (in principle). The idling system is of the usual type found in static carburetters in which the idling mixture discharge hole is placed near the throttle edge so that the position of the throttle, when at small openings, controls the suction on the idling system. The throttle movement in relation to the idling discharge hole is the reverse of the usual practice; instead of the throttle traversing the discharge hole downwards, and putting more of this hole into communication with the high depression region above the throttle, a similar effect is obtained by means of a special shaped lobe on the edge of the throttle as shewn on the appended sketch.

The induction system consists of two separate branches, each feeding three cylinders, with a simple hot spot at the bend where the vertical riser from the carburetter joins the
