ROLLS-ROYCE OF AMERICA, INC. SPRINGFIELD, MASS. X8280 W-Hives Have you done anything along these lines please? OY10.R.12.23.27 December 23rd, 1927. [STAMP: RECEIVED JAN 11 1928] Jan 11. 28 Mr. Thomas Nadin, Rolls Royce Ltd., Derby, England. Dear Nadin: RE PILOT JET - SECTION 5280 Referring to OY1.R.12.22.27 we have gone far enough already to prove that we are on hopeful lines and that something on the lines of the combined scheme SK 170, 171 is possible. We have been giving the pilot jet 1-1/4 turns of the needle which will pass .4 pts/min. under a 4 foot head. We find we can start at say 38°F very readily with 1/8th of a turn, passing .02 pts/min. under a 4 foot head. The draining and baffling of SK 170 is certainly no disadvantage in starting and appears to be a slight advantage in getting a clean fog into the engine. With the combination of: - (a) Say 1/4 of a turn on the needle(.05 pts/min under 4 foot head.) (b) Drain and baffle The indications are that we can run the Phantom engine on the pilot jet and still get instant starting, without danger of overchoking. We are now going to apply in a preliminary way the very simple scheme of SK-171 for getting oil to the pilot jet while it is open. (Continued) | ||
