To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to CJ. c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. to Hss c. to Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} Y 3855 E4/M29.6.22. RE. SPRING WASHERS. X.3238. We have duly received the samples of spring washers and we think that those that cone nearest to our standard are the flat washers made by Messrs. C. R.{Sir Henry Royce} Smithson & Co., Wolverhampton. These particular samples comply quite well with our table as regards outside diameter, their chief departure being with regard to thickness. The smaller washers are 80% of the thickness we ask for, and the larger washers are 50%. Nevertheless Mr. Royce thinks they ought to be quite satisfactory, and he would like the Expl: Dept: (and any other department) to make what tests they think are necessary with a view to getting these washers standardised at the earliest possible moment, as the one form of spring washer in use apart from Thackeray's. We are returning to you the actual set of sample washers which have been approved, as you may have no other samples, but should be glad if you would send us 3 or 4 sets of all sizes for our use in the D.O. "We notice that no samples are supplied for 9, 7 and 5 BA Perhaps you would kindly communicate with Messrs. Smithson & Co,( or any other firm) to see if they are prepared to make these sizes.
