29 H.P. - 8 CYLINDER CHRYSLER.

We had the opportunity of carrying out a careful comparative test between one of these cars fitted with a five-seater Sedan body, and 16-G.4, the car you had at West WitteringHenry Royce's home town last summer, which has an occasional four close coupled body with a collapsible top. 16-G.4. is, of course, fitted with a Japan engine.

The Chrysler sells at £600 complete. The principle dimensions of the unit are:-

3" x 4 1/4. 8 cylinder 3940 C.C. R.A.C. rating 29.

Comparing the two cars:-

Acceleration Top Gear.

Chrysler Top Gear 4.1-1. Tyres - 18" x 5.5.

10 - 20 M.P.H. - No difference.

20 - 60 M.P.H. - Chrysler gains a length.

Maximum Speed. - Chrysler 1 - 2 M.P.H. faster.

Test with the cut out of 16-G.4. open reversed the result to 60 M.P.H. and the maximum speed of the cars appeared to be identical. The Chrysler speedometer was 7 M.P.H. fast at 60 M.P.H.

Engine Smoothness.

The Chrysler had done 3,000 miles. It was not free from pick up vibrations up to 35 M.P.H. in fact they were quite marked, appreciably more so than on a standard 25 H.P. R-R.{Sir Henry Royce} or even the .75" six cylinder Chrysler we had at the Works. We should say they are using a high compression ratio. Above 60 M.P.H. the engine becomes smooth and remains so up to maximum speed. Our own run is characteristic of the 2.4.2. straight eight being entirely free from vibration. There is much more exhaust noise on this car than we should tolerate, but it is not very annoying because it remains a sound and does not produce "Violent Body Booming" like engine vibrations.
