BENTLEY III DIFFERENTIAL GEAR BOX TESTS.

P.D.41.

Effect of Temperature on Back Lash and Pre-load.

With the crownwheel locked, the backlash between it and the pinion - measured at 6" radius - was recorded at Shop temperature.

Also the initial preload of the differential bearings was determined.

These dimensions were remeasured after the temperature of the box had been increased to 100°C - by immersion in oil.

Cold. Hot.
Backlash .012 .009
Preload .003 Nil.
