E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Hives, Esq.,
Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Limited,
Derby.

Dear Mr. Hives,

I have to thank you for the courtesies you extended to me yesterday during my interesting trip to Derby.

I have written today to the Research Section of the Corporation asking them to arrange for Mr. Summers to reply in detail to the various questions listed in the notes you handed me yesterday, and I am hoping that I may be able to get these for you before long.

I have been thinking over Mr. Carter's work on this whole general subject and I am hoping that you will be able to get permission from him to let me have a copy of this report so that I can send it to Mr. Summers and ask him to reply if he disagrees with Mr. Carter in any way. In the meantime, if there are any further questions that occur to you in connection with this whole subject I wish you would let me know.

Naturally, you can rest assured that any information you may obtain from Mr. Carter for me will be treated as being entirely confidential by this office and by the Research Section of the Corporation.

You mentioned to me that you had been fitting your present kind of damper since 1906 and I understood you to say that although this damper is very effective in absorbing or removing torsional vibrations from the crankshaft, yet in certain cases or at certain speeds it is still possible to feel some remnant of this vibration. I think it might interest Mr.Summers to know more about this, and if it would not be too much trouble for you to let me have a few remarks on the nature of this
