ROAD WHEEL BRAKES.

With reference to E.1/M30.5.30.

You will recollect that about 5 years ago we found that if we made the centre of our brake shoes flexible it got rid of squeaks. We carried this out by cutting out the centre section of the shoe as indicated in the attached sketch. At the time nothing further was done with this scheme but it seems to us to be a simpler way of ensuring that the toe is always in action, than any mechanical contrivance.

The amount of flexibility could be graduated to give the desired result.

We are trying out the scheme suggested by R.{Sir Henry Royce}

Our own views are that shortage of brake area has a great deal to do with the trouble as we find that we were definitely better off for squeaking when we eliminated the chamfer, which reduced the brake area appreciably.

We are still badly off compared to other cars in this respect.
