for attention of Mr. Hives.

Dear Sirs,

We are obliged for your favour of the 29th. ulto. and we are very interested in the information you are good enough to give us as to tyre wear obtained at different pressures.

There are many factors which require to be taken into consideration beyond that of tread wear. We quite appreciate that this can be considerably minimised by a reduction of air pressure, for the two principal reasons - firstly that the reduction of pressure increases the contact area of tyre with road, so reducing the load per unit of contact area, and secondly it reduces the compression arising from the more highly inflated tyre leaving the road when the surface is bumpy, and accelerating whilst clear of the road, and of course retaking its grip of the road with considerable compression.

We wish to see very much higher mileages than those you name, and can in fact now assure you of much better tread wear from a modification of the tread which considerably increases the contact area under the higher pressures.

I am sending you over for your test a couple of these tyres, and should be glad if you could arrange to have these fitted to our rear wheels for your test.
