Referring to your memo. S116/E21031., designs for improved manifolds for P. 1. chassis of both cast iron and aluminium head types were sent to R.{Sir Henry Royce} on 28.3. 31., and for the 20HP. and 'China' chassis on 2. 4. 31., to Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence. We received R's criticisms of these designs and put the required alterations in hand. Some delay occurred in completing these due to staff illness, but the drawings were again seen by R.{Sir Henry Royce} on his return from Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence, and issued to Derby on 13.5.31. with following instructions: "We send you herewith LeC. 2894. 2896. and 2902. 'shewing improved exhaust pipes for P. 1. and G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} 2. chassis. "R would like you to make and test LeC. 2896. and *2902. forthwith so that the relative merits of air cooling *ribs and sliding glands can be determined on the small 'chassis 'before we proceed with LeC. 2894 for P. 1." We are awaiting Derby's report on LeCs.2896. and 2902. The type of exhaust manifold most likely to give unfailing service under the most exacting conditions unfortunately has not been possible on R.{Sir Henry Royce} models hitherto due to the necessity for carving the pipe to clear sparking plugs or other manifolds, but this is not the case with J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} 3. where up to the moment the only restriction we have is that all exhaust gas must pass down at the front end.
