From Our Special Correspondent
BELFAST, Saturday.
FRENZIED scenes of enthusiasm marked the brilliant win by 73sec. of Freddie Dixon, the Middlesbrough driver, in a Riley car, in the 500-miles Ulster Tourist Trophy race on the Ards circuit to-day at an average speed of 76.90 miles an hour.
E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} R.{Sir Henry Royce} Hall, the Bentley driver, who struggled desperately to overtake the winner, was second with an average speed of 80.36 miles an hour.
Earl Howe, in a Bugatti, was 2min. 53sec. behind Hall.
Admirers surged round Dixon, who was crowned with a laurel wreath while sitting in his car with a glass of champagne in his hand.
Dixon said: "I was confident of victory, and the car ran splendidly. I had some uneasiness that my rival, Hall, might race to the end without changing his tyres, but he had to do so like myself. I hope to take part in many more races, and it has been a really enjoyable day."
Victory "cup" for Freddie Dixon.
