SECRET.

FOUR WHEEL BRAKES.

We have had a complaint from one of the cars running in France that the grease has got out of the front hubs and got on to the brakes. The oil retaining device in the front hubs is similar to that we have always used on the standard cars i.e., a felt washer. It is the usual practice to pack the front hubs with grease. We believe that has happened in this case, is that the hubs have been packed with grease and when the front brakes have been used excessively, the grease has melted and run out. In future, we propose recommending that no excess of grease is put into the front hubs, but only that the ball bearings themselves are packed with grease.

At the same time we consider that the design should be looked into so that any oil leaking through the front hub can be drained away in a similar manner to the method we employ on the rear hubs.
