To By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std.

Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std.9/AP.7.12.37.

As requested by By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} we give herewith a summary of the position with regard to Mk.V. matrix replacement on Ph.III.

(1) Causes of overheating on Ph.III. (High speed) is choking of waterways of matrix due to:-

(a) Presence of corrosion deposit in water system which silts up waterways - this is primarily due to the presence of unprotected iron (hot spot box) and aluminium in water system.

(b) Small size of waterway ends on Mk.V. matrices.

(2) Remedies adopted to cure trouble.

(a) From approximately January 1937 all hot spot boxes have been steam treated to By's instructions to reduce corrosion. D.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary} series onwards will have aluminium hot spot boxes.

(b) In cases of complaint, customers defective Mk.V. matrix unit complete (includes matrix and top and bottom tanks) is changed for a replacement unit and defective unit is returned to Messrs John Marstons Ltd. who remove tanks, clean out matrix, open waterway, replace tanks and forward unit to Works, where it is tested for leaks before being returned to replacement stock. All work carried out at Messrs. Marstons Ltd. is F.O.C.

So far this change of matrix is only made if complaint of overheating is received.

(3) Amount of scrap involved.

Owing to the delay which necessarily occured before the replacement scheme was in operation, and owing to delays in supply of replacement matrices, there is a floating stock of replacement Mk.V. units which will be necessarily scrap when the replacement scheme terminates, unless the Repair Dept. are able to utilise any of these units to replace damaged units on A.{Mr Adams} series cars in the future.
As far as we can determine at the moment, the extent of this floating stock is approx. 25 Mk.V. matrices, approx. 3 Mk.V. matrices were scrapped by the Expl.Dept. in the early stages of investigating this trouble.
