4.1.21.

X.4215. - BLERIOT PHI CUT-OUT.

Specification of inspection and test.

(1) The cut-out shall be connected up by low resistance wires to a twelve volt dynamo, twelve volt battery of ample capacity, two ammeters A, B, and a voltmeter V according to the diagram on p.2.

(2) The cut-out being in a cold condition but not lower in temperature than 15°C, the dynamo shall be started and driven at gradually increasing speed until the cut-out is just operated. The instant of operation will be shown by a movement of the needle of the ammeter A. {Mr Adams} The readings of the voltmeter V and ammeter B immediately preceding this instant shall be noted. The former shall lie between the limits 12.2 to 12.8 and the latter shall not exceed .20 ampere at 12.5 volts.

(3) The dynamo shall now be speeded up momentarily to allow charging current to flow into the battery after which the speed shall be reduced until the A ammeter reading is zero. The connections to this ammeter shall then be reversed, after which the speed shall be gradually reduced still further until the cut-out contacts fall apart. The instant of falling away will be shown by the dropping to zero of the needle of ammeter A. {Mr Adams} The readings of the voltmeter and both ammeters immediately preceding this instant shall be noted. The reading of the ammeter A shall not exceed 1.0 amps.
