PHANTOM - STRENGTHENED STEPIRONS.

Herewith we send N. sch. 2382. shewing the reinforced step-iron which we should like got on to the Phantom as quickly as possible (E.2. series, as suggested by you.)

On account of the rear springs it did not appear possible to increase the depth at a place where it would be useful so we have obtained the increased strength by widening the flanges at the lower part. The increase is of the order of 64%, which we think is enough to be appreciated. We have long had the idea that the step-iron was on the short side, as indicated in the cross section, and we suggest that when convenient it might be lengthened.

With reference to the proposal to add an extra step-iron to the short chassis, on a scrap view on this drawing we have shewn two suggestions. We should like Derby, and the C.S.C. to give us an idea of which of these two schemes they would prefer. We ourselves are inclined to favour the 2nd. one.
