B.M.40 ENGINE.

The whole of the design work for this engine is now completed and the following schemes have been produced to shew the detail modifications required to enable the B.40 (now BM.40) engine to be installed in the Junior Range (see PL.357 and memo. Ev{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}/DB.{Donald Bastow - Suspensions}9/JH.2.10.40.).

Herewith PL.383.

This scheme consists of a general longitudinal section through the engine shewing the new Myth type sheet metal sump reduced in depth for ground clearance and Oil Pump to suit. At the front end the wheelcase is altered to suit Myth Front Engine Suspension details. Myth water pump cannot be fitted to this engine as we should like, because of the different position of the water gallery pipe.

PL.384.

A general arrangement of the near side which shows a modified exhaust manifold to clear the new starter motor position. At the same time it will be noticed that we have introduced a more Prince of Wales feather effect. The diameter of the downtake pipes is reduced from 2" diameter to 1.750 diameter.

PL.385.

This scheme shows a plan of the sump showing finger grooves between the jointing boltsand stiffening grooves on the sump bottom face to prevent drumming.

PL.386.

Which deals with the offside of the engine showing the dynamo mounting brackets suitable for the Myth dynamo and the modification to the position of the lugs on the top of the General Oil cleaner. The latter is necessary to clear the steering column.

A cross section shows the new position of the dip stick to clear the starter motor. This is the only alteration to the pattern that we ask for, and would have been necessay in any case because on Thumper there was a design error.
