Referring to our recent memo. re thermometer bulb position, By/CS. has suggested that a suitable position for the thermometer is available by moving the boss of same nearer to the front exhaust port - SCD.504 indicates the position in question. Accordingly we have fitted a head up in this manner and tested same on test bed, measuring temperatures at the rear of the cylinder head, at new position of bulb and in outlet pipe from engine. The attached sheet gives the results. In spite of the fact that the circulating water flow of the engine on the test bed is lower than in the car owing to hydraulic resistance of test bed cooling system, and consequent tendency to accentuate local temperature differences, it will be seen that the difference between the actual outlet temp. and that at the proposed position is only 1 - 3 °C. We think therefore that the proposed position is quite satisfactory and should be standardised immediately. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std. | ||
