I have not seen it suggested that a contributory cause may be our new arrangements for starting up the engine when cold. In previous years when starting up in cold weather it was more or less the custom for the chauffeur to place a penny under the low speed jet, now it appears to be necessary to run the engine for a few turns by means of the self-starter, with the two-way Priming Cock half open on the priming side, in order that an excess of petrol may be sucked into the induction pipe. Whilst this is doubtless quite effective for starting, it may have the effect, especially with a low grade fuel, of sooting up certain plugs in a way made possible by the present self-starter. P.N.
