shunt winding is all copper it looks as if, when in the fully hold condition, a slight reverse current at the instant of cutting in is right in order that, when fully hot, the cutting in point is not too late in relation to the balancing speed. We should think on the whole that the cutting in point for an average temperature condition should be a shade later than the balancing speed, but the whole matter is again complicated by the value of the battery E.M.F. Further, the amount of reverse current has to be taken into consideration owing to the loss of charge this may account for during frequent stops and starts.
