RE. OIL SEAL FOR BRAKE COUNTERSHAFT.

Our daily report on 21.G.IV. of the 6th Sept.1935 explains why E could not find any trace of our modification.

" GEARBOX. Ease of change good, lever free from rattle. "
" Oil leak from bearing of new swinging arm, requires "
" perfect seal as fitted to old one. Slack in rear drive "
" coupling splines. "

The sudden calling back of 21.G.IV. being the reason. Our memo of the 15th August explains why it was done. (Our ref.GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}/5/JAB.15.8.35.)

" GEARBOX. Upon checking up level of oil, the box was found "
" to be practically empty. There were three causes for this."
" 1) Bijur pipe line clip & screw missing under Servo. 3/16 " hole left in box. "
" 2) Bijur pipe line clip & screw missing under Swinging arm" 3/16 " hole left in box. "
" 3) The baffle in the bracket of the swinging arm where the"
" Brake pedal shaft goes through, has too big an aperture"
" between the baffle and the shaft. Oil was leaking past "
" and down the swinging arm. "

We received no reason or instructions why the new type swinging arm was sent out and we replied.(Our Ref.GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}/2/JAB. Dated 3.9.35.)

" 21. G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} IV. We have to-day fitted the new Servo swinging "
" arm with the friction device fitted at the bottom, which h"
" has been sent out without any information re same. The "
" new hardened shafts have been fitted to the change speed "
" lever. The Car will resume running in the morning. "

Our memo. of the 16th Aug.1935 gives the trouble we were experiencing. (Our Ref.GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}/I/JAB.16.8.35.)

" WITH REGARD TO 21.G.IV.CHANGE SPEED LEVER STICKING. "
" The fault is due to design and being fitted up too tight. "
" The ball race had seized on the shaft. "
" The balls had cut grooves in the shaft for the length "
" they had to slide. We are enclosing a sketch showing this"
