46-PK car at WW. has this arrangement of servo.

We had hoped that the worm giving the 7 to 1 reduction would have given us a still further improvement, but the one we have tested of this type, this does not appear to be the case.

We found however it is very difficult to judge the amount of improvement on any one set of gears because even with the standard arrangement we get some gears which are reasonably quiet.

The best arrangement we have running is a car fitted with 3 1/2 to 1 reduction worm gears, and 2 to 1 reduction spur gears fitted to special stiff shafts. On this XXXX car it is very difficult to pick out any noise, but there is a slight period at the same speed as we get it on other cars.

Our opinion is that if we are going to make a modification it should be such that the period of noise is entirely eliminated. There is no noise for instance from the Hispano servo gears.

We have carried out numerous tests to try and prove whether it is the gearbox itself which is deflected. We have not been able to make any difference by stiffening the box in various directions. The noise is at its worst with such a slight pressure on the servo that it is difficult to imagine any distorsion in the box.

BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} is instructing further modifications to the worm gears. We are also seeing whether we can reproduce the excellent results we have got with the altered worm ratio and stiffer shafts.
