SPRING TESTS. The first method of ascertaining the rating of these springs is as follows :- The spring shackles should be in the standard position. The load on the spring should be increased by increments of 300 lbs. After 300 lbs. have been added, the spring should be lifted 1.5" and then suddenly released so that it may freely find its position of rest. The mean of two or three readings should be taken in each case. Readings required are as indicated on readings sheet. The spring should also be tested by loading up increasing the load as gently as possible taking readings every 300 lbs. and the load then removed as gently as possible taking readings every 300 lbs. This series of tests should be carried out on an 11,000 lbs. spring. (a) With a pre-front brake axle pad. (b) With a post-front wheel brake pad. In each case great care should be taken to pull the spring clips down with an approximately equal tension in each case. After these tests, shackle tests should be carried out on the spring with the wide axle pad. These should be conducted as in method (a). The shackle should be arranged :- (a) Vertical in 1/4" neg. camber position. (b) 20º inwards Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} | ||
