--o-- they are developing, which is liquid cooled, of Conqueror design, specifications being:- 5 1/4 bore x 6 1/2 stroke, Capacity 1718 cu. inches. Rating 750 B H P at 2,400 R P M 1050 pounds dry weight. Crankcase. Crankcase and cylinder construction in one piece similar to F V.{VIENNA} Reduction Gear. This is an internal gear .58 or .6 (see sketch). Reason for this type of gear is to have propellor running in same direction as crank shaft to prevent propellor torque reaction. Supercharger. Blowing through carburettor with drive taken from front of engine as Curtis practice, which permits of blower being dropped below crank shaft centre for improved lay out of auxiliaries. Speed of blower has not yet been decided, have run at speeds ranging from 17,000 to 24,000 R.P.M. Bearings. Lead Bronze throughout of grooveless type, having 6 oil feed holes fed from external groove. Connecting Rods. Not definitely decided but will, no doubt, be articulated type. They do not wish to adopt marine type rod, as they doubt reliability of forked rod, and the production cost of marine type big end being too high. Incidentally they were very impressed with the R.R. lead bearings of this type and stated they were an excellent job, and also considered the scrap percentage was remarkably low and in line with their general production experience. Lubrication. High pressure 120 lbs/sq.in. minimum to allow reduced bearing clearances. | ||
