-6- only be indicated on general lines, as above. If it is proposed to utilise taper spiral springs, the smaller value of D being at the end of the spring where the compression is applied, this would appear to be, in effect, the equivalent of increasing the wave velocity of the spring at the small end relatively to that at the larger end. The increase in the wave velocity arises in this case from a reduction in the quantity D, but it would appear that it could be equally well brought about by a reduction of the quantity k i.e. still retaining a parallel spring, but winding the spring with more open coils at the end where compression is applied relatively to their density at the other end. This may not be such a practical proposition but appears mathematically to be equally suitable on principle. EFC. | ||
