Report issued

re Phantom III Body Mounting and Tyre Noise.

It is very urgent that we should settle up something finally as regards our policy in connection with the above, as it will be necessary to prepare revised instructions for coachbuilders who are actually building bodies for these chassis. At the same time it will also be necessary to instruct such modifications as are required on the chassis. We should, therefore, like to have your report up-to-date on the experiments made.

We should like to have from you particulars of the thickness of rubber used by Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} /Whyman on 33-EX and also the durometer hardness.
I have this morning asked Hn {F. C. Honeyman - Retail orders} if he can arrange to have 34-EX altered by Park Ward's before it comes to Derby, to the mounting shown on LeC. 4849 together with semi-isolation attachment to dash, which latter feature we understand is not on your experimental car at the moment.

One peculiarity we have come up against is that although the theoretical drawing allowance for the packing pieces between the body brackets and coachwork is only .375" this dimension varies from ½" to 1" on all the bodies built hitherto. It, therefore, follows that if we use rubber beyond the theoretical possible thickness we may be in trouble at any time on production should this condition right itself. The matter is being investigated but there is no explanation forthcoming up to the moment. If we adhere to 3/8" as the theoretical amount it then means using only .250" of rubber, the remaining .125" being required for shims. This thickness of rubber may be insufficient for the purpose required.

E. {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
