STEEL ARTILLERY TYPE WHEELS WITH WELL BASE RIMS.

We wrote you on the 30th ultimo, reference BYL/H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 30.12.26, pointing out that we saw no prospect of completing a 10,000 mile trial on the new steel artillery wheels made suitable for medium pressure and balloon tyres, by the addition of well base rims, and suggesting that since no material alteration had been made to the wheel, which could possibly affect its strength, it would be a reasonable attitude to agree to standardize the above parts without waiting for the completion of a trial run in France.

The wheels will be fitted next time we have a sufficient number of new designs under test to justify us sending cars to France, but in the meantime it does not seem a reasonable policy to hold up the manufacture of these wheels and cause annoyance to customers by not having the wheels to supply under these circumstances.

We would like to have BJ's consent, and your own, to this proposal and procedure being adopted.

Will you kindly take the matter up, as in the opinion of both the Experimental Dept. and myself there are no new features which would cause failure, and the question of welding is one which is with us every time on every production set of wheels of this type, there being no reason at all why the welding problem should vary by the addition of the well-base rim as compared with the straight sided rim, whilst in addition the increased stability of the wheel by the symmetrical rim design, is a very big asset.

I would further emphasize we have none of these wheels on order, either for 20 HP. or 40/50 HP. and that it will be six weeks to two months after placing orders before we can expect deliveries.

We cannot, of course, order the new type wheels until we get BJ's consent, although, as pointed out above, we ourselves have no fears at all as to the reliability of either the 20 HP. or 40/50 HP. type wheels.
