RE: CADILLAC.

With reference to the strip condition of the various units mentioned in your Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}11/KW.8.3.35.

Chain Drive for Auxiliaries

It was found on examination that whilst the sprockets and chain teeth are in good condition, the chain links are badly worn, there being approx .010 slack between each rivet and link, the accumulated clearance end to end, allowing a total stretch of .600.

Owing to the wear in the links, the chain is very flexible sideways and whilst it would probably run a further 10,000 miles or 20,000 miles it would no doubt become noisy in operation, if it has not already done so and we should say it is now due for replacement.

Pistons

One of the pistons has been examined by the Laboratory and as will be observed from the attached report, it is stated that the anodic treatment has worn through locally on the thrust faces, ring grooves and gudgeon pin bores.

Connecting Rods

There is a network of fine cracks in the upper halves of all big end bearings and one or two rods shew signs of hammering, but there is no loose metal and the bearings should last another 10,000 miles at any rate.

These rods are not fitted with loose shells, the Whitemetal being applied direct onto the steel.

Valves

One exhaust Valve has burnt out. we are taking particulars so that this can be replaced then it will be passed along except we shall have to make one our own to lack of spares in this country. RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}
