Summary of sparking plug trouble experienced during an F.12 type test.

Further to our report EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}9/H.18.1.28. we give below summary of the Sparking Plug trouble experienced during this type test:-

Changed after. Position Quantity. Net.hrs.run per Plug.

30 hrs. All inlets and 6.A. exhaust. 13. 30
38 " 1 inlet. 4.A. 1. 38 (level and caused involuntary stop)
40 " All exhaust except 6.A. 11. 40
50 " 1 exhaust. 3.A. 1. 10
70 " 1 inlet. 3.A. 1. 40
80 " 2 exhaust. 4 & 5 B. 2. 40
90 " 3 exhaust. 3.5 & 6 B. 1 inlet. 2.A. 4. 3 & 6 B. 50. 5.B. 10. 2.A. 60.
100 " 1 inlet. 1.A. 1 70

After running 29 hours, engine showed loss of power,signs of preignition. Third 10 hour run was completed with power loss. Plugs examined after test. (13 plugs, (12 inlet and 1 exhaust) overheated and changed as above.
After 38 hrs. involuntary stop.No.4.A. inlet ignition plug centre electrode blew out. Agreed A.I.D. to refix another plug and complete the 10 hour test.
Other plugs replaced after the 10 hour tests as showed signs of overheating, as above recorded.
