X.3039 X.2808+1476 Regarding aero engines, and car high speed parts, it is evident that we must do all that is possible to use duralumin insteadof steel, magnalium instead of the heavier alum. alloys for crankcases, and magnesium instead of the heavier alum. alloys for pistons. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} sent us the figure of 2.96 for crankchamber alloy. If this refers to the alloy with much zinc in solution, I fear it is nearly 3.2. Anyway the magnalium type would be 15% lighter. It seems desirable that we try this, and the magnesium piston metal for pistons. Something should be moving at once. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
