E.A.C.III. CROSS STEERING TUBE.
--------------------------------

As the result of Mr. Hives' test, he is satisfied that we will have to put a bend in the cross steering tube in order to clear the bottom bolt making the joint between the timing gear casing and the crankcase itself.

The amount of this bend is .500". We should add this to the strengthened tube, but at the same time I would like Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} to make up a Cross Steering Tube with this bend in it, of the original thickness, of which there will be tubes in stock, in order to test whether these tubes are liable to the same type of failure as happened in the case of the original straight tubes he tested.

As a matter of fact the tubes of the original thickness which were abandoned, I instructed should not be delivered, although they were finished, as there was no object in having scrap material sent along to be stored in our Works, and periodically examined.

I find however from Mr. Mills that there is sufficient material in stock of the original dimensions to enable Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} to make an experiment with a bent tube of the original gauge.

In addition to the foregoing points which need attention, we shall need covers for the mouse-trap type of spring as well as for the top and bottom joints of the coupling rod on the front brake connection.

Will Mr. D'Aeth kindly get out the necessary drawings.
