E/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}1/MN.5.4.37. Re Steering Columns. The Works have pointed out to us the large number of operations required to produce the steering column cam tube, and have suggested that the main length could consist of a tube with a small turned portion attached to the top end to receive the upper bearing and steering wheel. Such a construction was used on the "Silver Ghost" and the 25 H.P. with the R.R. steering box. We send herewith Lec.5601 which shows such a built-up cam tube for both (Phantom III, Wraith III and 25/30 H.P.) and we have sent a print of this scheme to the Cost Dept. in order that we may obtain comparative figures for the cost of the production.
