X.3035 Battery Thermometers (P.& R.{Sir Henry Royce})

Upon receipt of your EFC2/T12.8.24, I wrote Peto & Radford that you were still of opinion that there is some misunderstanding on their part with regard to the thermometers which were supplied against our order 31662 of 5.7.24, adding that you had pointed out that beyond question there is a difference between the thermometers supplied and the one illustrated in their sheet headed "Instructions for first charge of P.& R.{Sir Henry Royce} Accumulators", since the former had elongated reservoirs and the one illustrated has a spherical reservoir.

I pointed out that it has not been found possible to get the whole of the reservoir of the thermometer submerged in the electrolyte above the plates of a chassis battery.

I asked them to again look into this matter and let us know whether they could supply thermometers with spherical reservoirs which can be totally submerged in the electrolyte above the plates of the chassis batteries they supply to us.

On the 19th ult. Peto & Radford acknowledged receipt of our letter stating they were again taking the matter up with their Instrument Shop at their Works and having an exhaustive investigation made.

This morning we are in receipt of a further letter from them apologising for not having written earlier and adding:-

"On communicating with our Works we found that the thermometers supplied were those illustrated in our catalogue, but we quite appreciate the difficulties you mention and have been endeavouring to obtain a more suitable instrument from our manufacturers.

"Up to the time of writing we have not had any success but we are proceeding with our investigations and as soon as we have anything definite we will write you immediately."

You will note they again repeat that the thermometers supplied were those illustrated in their catalogue. This is the point that you dispute and your point has been communicated to Peto & Radford.

Do you think it will serve any useful purpose to carry this matter further with Peto & Radford?

I would prefer to ascertain whether the Chloride Co. can assist us and with this object in view I am writing said firm.

Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}
