X.4094. To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}2/M1 8.7.25. MARLES STEERING GEAR. Mr. Royce has agreed to fitting a Marles steering experimentally to a New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I chassis, and we have written to the Marles Steering Co. asking them to put the job in hand, sending them a sketch - N.sch.2034 - indicating how we think the steering might be mounted in our frame. Would you kindly send them the detail of the worm shaft and of the rocker shaft for the particular type of steering selected by Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} This is in order that they may get diameters for the conical end etc. Would you also kindly send them a dtail of the bracket F.72876. for mounting on the frame, and of the bracket at the top of the stationary control tube for carrying the quadrants. We suggest that we should cut the taper serrations both on the pendulum lever and on the steering lever. Would Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} say what type of steering this should be made for? We anticipate that it will not take long to get the column as the marles people are very keen. Mr. Royce has instructed that we should pay for this column and as this is rather outside our province, though we have told the Marles people we are going to pay for it, perhaps you would make any necessary arrangements.
