HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ) FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} [strikethrough]EFC.[/strikethrough] [strikethrough]C. to BJ. WCR.[/strikethrough] [strikethrough]BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer}[/strikethrough] Y4008 R3/M2.12.27. AUTO: CHARGE CONTROL SWITCH. A specimen of this should be fitted to each of the two cars going to France for the 10,000 miles trials, and also to EAC. 7. which I shall use in France, so that I may see how it behaves in every day practice. You will notice that I was always anxious about increasing the complication of the electrical system on the cars, which already is beyond the understanding of most people, but if this arrangement has the extra virtue of protecting the dynamo against damage should a battery connection become disconnected, or broken, or corroded, I think it will justify its adoption. It does however put some responsibility on to us which would nominally be carried by the driver and hence the owner. We thank EFC. for his perseverance in trying to introduce what he thought was the best thing, and I am satisfied now that the modification has been made so that the dynamo is [underline]practically inert and sparkless[/underline] when the charge automatically ceases. This scheme of [underline]cutting out the dynamo with a very high resistance[/underline] becomes I understand a R-R unique scheme, and if so, we ought to be able to get a patent in the names of Mr. Clarke and myself.
